The Next New Thing
Everybody has proposed so many wonderful ideas. New media is going to new heights, new directions and who knows where that is going to take us. I propose a phone that will have a camera but instead of a regular screen displaying the image, there will be a projector reflecting a 3D image of the person you are talking to which would take communication to the next level. During the conversation, you could also project real images of anything you would be talking about just like in real life, as if you were really in front of that person or thing. That device generating the image would come with a transparent (invisible) screen when you are not using the phone but would change from translucent to a different light color to attenuate the ambient light so that when the image is projected you get an image as close to reality image that would move as a regular person would..

Our Class Wiki - So Far
I have experimented WIKI and have updated some grammatical or typing errors. I also have added an article about 2012 New Media winners since there was an entry for 2011 and nothing was available for 2012. You can check out these winner by clicking the link below
2012
NEW MEDIA AWARDS / WEBSITE AWARDS / WINNERS - Once more, contributors to
the field of New Media are being recognized for their contributions. Read all
about it.
I also am working on creating my own page about crowdsourcing. New Media, Entrepreneurship and Crowdsourcing . I am a Business Management/Entrepreneurship major and I find that even though the class is about New Media, other business major students like myself might find the subject interesting. P2P File sharing
There is a new
way to make use of the internet and one's computer: it is file sharing. File
sharing is the process of making digitally stored information available to
other users for use. As reminded by Choi, David Y, Perez, Arturo on their paper named
"Online piracy and the emergence of new business models " the
internet was originally created by the government to allow military and
scientists to share new development and new technology. But companies like
Microsoft have commercialized the software industry which turned file sharing
into something illegal. Originally, this was not the case. But as demonstrated by
the Napster case, file sharing now falls under copyright laws.
File sharing include P2P, peer to peer file sharing which
is the use of a software to research
other users who have open content and access their file whether it music,
movies, books etc.. The document comes in bits and pieces and is reorganized by
the person who downloaded the document. This is considered highly illegal and the United States
contrarily to the European countries strictly reinforces copyright reinforces copyright laws
and punishes piracy.
But people are resisting and moving to different places
and countries once their operations are cracked down as mentioned by Eric
Pfanner in his article "Should
Online Scofflaws Be Denied Web Access?" But, online piracy and file
sharing has contributed to great innovation and provided new business models as
the people working on creating them or
the people using them can provide groundbreaking information that can lead to
successful businesses.

Advice to Baruch
New Media is getting more important by the day and As a new hired by Baruch College to improve the College I believe the school could take many other steps to improve the College New Media standard.
I think that Creative Commons is a great idea as it allows people to make themselves known through open source. So, in the same spirit I would create a platform to allow students to propose ideas that could be beneficial for students, or the school in general. It could also be used for and by alumni as well. Say, for example a student or an alumni had an idea to start a business, they could present it to that platform and get feedback from a large educated group. This could open more doors or give access to an even larger pool than just say Facebook because more people would know about the project.

Privacy & Confidentiality
The emergence of new media tools such as YouTube, Facebook
and Twitter have been creating some tension between copyright owners, the
public and site managers. Copyrights owners have requested from companies like YouTube
to take down videos posted because of the copyrighted content of certain material used.
This privacy and copyright issue hinder creativity as
people are afraid to post videos or do not contest the copyright companies
decisions to take down their videos even though there are groups of free
lawyers representing them according to the article About fair use, and the problems of
old media: As Rights Clash on YouTube, Some Music Vanishes" by Tim Arrango
Writers and artist
are now posting their works online for the public to taste for free. people can
download unknown artists songs for free.
This gives the artist exposure to the public who can sample their and decide
based on the number of downloads if this artist is able to make a name for
himself just like Allan Vilhan in the article by Andy Raskin "Giving it Away (for Fun and Profit) Creative Commons encourages artists
to share and distribute their work for free. And that could be the key to a new
multibillion-dollar industry". The artists makes money however if a
company wants to use their music for a movie or soundtracks for a commercial or
a game for example. A new company, Creative Commons, is making a name itself serving as the
intermediary between the artist and rest of the public and leading the way to a
new industry.

Creativity and New Media
New Media fosters creativity. Not everybody is into virtual world. I for myself have not explored it yet. However, there are many ways one can express their creativity through New Media whether it is for social or professional purposes.
One of the way I express my creativity is through my facebook page. There, I can post articles, links, pictures, video or let my friends know about my interests, talk about what's going on, express my opinion and play games when I have the time. It's like a one stop shopping place anything can happen.
